Museum goes Green!
Sustainability with Rural Museums East
The Farmland Museum has developed a sustainability action plan looking at environmental, economic and social measures as part of a Renaissance funded project from Rural Museums East. RME is a group of rural museums-Gressenhall Rural Life Museum in Norfolk, The Museum of East Anglian Life in Suffolk and Stockwell Park in Luton.
Being the smallest museum in the group the Farmland Museum is able to pilot and test drive a number of initiatives on a smaller scale than the larger museums which will illustrate the sustainable work that can be done by museums in the East. From this pilot several seminars will take place in the spring and there will be small grants available for museums undertaking their own action plans developed from a specially designed toolkit.
So far the Farmland Museum has installed hippos in the toilet block and insulation on the roof of the main office (cutting the heating needed in half) and education building. There was also a visit in November for staff and volunteers to Gressenhall to see their environmental initiatives and learn about their plans for the future which include eco buildings. Other plans include making education links with the Donarbon Waste Management Park with its new Mechanical Biological Treatment Plant, better interpretation of the allotment and composting and sensor lighting in key buildings.
Get ready for more creative and fun children's drop-in holiday activities throughout the school holidays on selected Thursdays. As these days have increased in popularity and with rising costs in materials we have had to increase our admission price for children on these days from £2 to £3 which includes all activities on offer and normal admission. We hope that this will still offer good value for money with no hidden extra costs when on site.
