Outdoor Spaces

Our gardens and open spaces are the perfect place to relax, amidst history and nature.

Denny Abbey and The Farmland Museum is nestled in the Cambridgeshire countryside, surrounded by the open fields of a working farm.

Bring a picnic, grab a coffee and a good book, then sit and enjoy nature. During the warmer months you can see cows and their calves grazing the fields and you will often spot birds of prey and game birds.

Enjoy time outdoors with us

Step outside and enjoy the open spaces of our heritage site, where history and nature come together in perfect harmony.

The Farmland Museum focuses on life in the Fens in the 1940s and 1950s, and our allotment is no different. It has been planted to show the fruit and vegetables that would have been grown at that time – during and just after World War II, when food was at a premium.

Our play area is very popular with younger visitors and features a full-size Fordson tractor to sit on, a climbing frame and slide.

We also have a play shed with toys, games and ride-on tractors for you and your children to enjoy together.

Throughout the summer, we have additional activities for youngsters to enjoy – see the What’s On pages for more details.

The garden was an important resource for families. It was a source of fruit and vegetables for the table, as well as flowers to brighten the home.

Part of the cottage garden has been planted to show how Denny Abbey’s medieval residents would have grown plants for both medicinal and dyeing use.
